Getting to Columbus, Indiana from Major Cities and Airports

Columbus is located directly off Interstate 65, making it one of the most accessible destinations in southern Indiana. The city is approximately 45 miles south of Indianapolis, 70 miles north of Louisville, and within a day's drive of many major Midwest markets. Visitors should check for current I-65 construction projects and roadwork alerts before traveling.

• From I-65 exit #68, follow SR 46E into Columbus.
• As you approach the red bridge, get in the left lane
• As you cross the bridge, stay in the middle lane
• As you leave the bridge, continue in the middle lane, which will take you straight at the courthouse
• As you go past the courthouse, get in the left lane
• Continue for one block past Washington Street, to Franklin Street – watch for the brown directional sign for the Visitors Center on your left.
• Turn left onto Franklin Street, a one-way street heading north.
• Continue three blocks, move into the right lane.
• The Visitors Center will be on your right, on the corner of Fifth & Franklin Streets.
• Continue just past the building – turn right, into the Visitors Center and Library parking lot. If the lot is full, other parking options are available nearby, go HERE to view a parking guide.

• I-74 to the Greensburg exit #134A.
• From Greensburg follow SR 46W to Columbus for 19 miles.
• When you come to the four-way stop at the intersection of SR 46 and Hwy 9, do NOT turn south onto Highway 46; instead, continue straight ahead for 8 miles, straight into the east side of Columbus (you will be on 25th Street).
• Continue on this road through town until you come to a T-intersection, which will be Washington Street.
• Turn left (south) onto Washington Street and continue just over 1.25 miles.
• Turn left at the stoplight for 5th Street.
• At next intersection, turn left onto Franklin Street, a one-way street heading north.
• The Visitors Center will be on your right.
• Continue just past the building – turn right, into the Visitors Center and Library parking lot. Visitors Center parking is at the south end of the lot. If the lot is full, other parking options are available nearby, see the downtown parking guide.

Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is the closest major airport to Columbus and serves travelers from across the United States and around the world. Located less than an hour from downtown Columbus, IND offers convenient access to the city through rental cars, private transportation providers, and regional shuttle services.

For most visitors, renting a car is the best transportation option. Columbus is approximately one hour south of Indianapolis International Airport and about 90 minutes north of Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF). Because Columbus is a smaller city, rideshare availability may be limited and wait times can vary, making a personal vehicle the most reliable way to explore the area and surrounding attractions.
